It was a proud night for India at the glittering World Retail Awards ceremony in Barcelona last night, as BS Nagesh walked up to the stage to receive the trophy for Shoppers’ Stop, which was adjudged The Emerging Market Retail of the Year. The mood at the ceremony complemented the atmosphere at the World Retail Congress, where India has been in sharp focus during most of the sessions and conversations.
As Nagesh collected the trophy, he said he was hoping for a day when India would collect all the trophies at the Congress.
The other contenders for the Emerging Market Retailer of the Year title were Giordano International Hong Kong; HPCL, India; Koton Retail and Textile Inc., Turkey; O Boticario, Brazil; and Russia’s largest retailer, the X5 Retail Group.
It was also a memorable night for British giant Tesco, which was honoured with two awards – for E-Retailer of the Year and Retailer of the Year. Swedish fashion retailer H&M, who earlier in the day had been ranked the Best Performing European Retail Brand by Interbrand, was given the honour of Multi Market Retailer of the Year. Retail Destination of the Year title went to the Zlote Tarasy shopping centre in Warsaw, Poland.
