Activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) yesterday wore skeleton costumes and staged a demonstration outside American fast-food outlet Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Chennai against the alleged abusive treatment of birds.
PETA activists stood outside KFC outlet holding placards that read ‘I would rather be dead than eat at KFC.’ The members also distributed leaflets to passers-by and gave details of the unhealthy food being served at KFC.
Speaking to media, Nikunj Sharma, campaign coordinator, PETA, said: “We are demonstrating to make people aware of the kind of cruelty infected by the KFC farms. Proper welfare standards are neither being maintained by the farms nor being checked by proper authorities. As a result, these birds are killed in a very inhumane manner and people are not being served healthy food. So we are telling people to boycott KFC.”
Countering the allegations, a KFC spokesperson said, “We are committed to humane treatment to chickens and thus ensure healthy food to our consumers. Everyday about 2,000 to 2,500 customers walk in to our restaurants.”
