It was expected and it ultimately happened. Sensex is reduced to four figures after the benchmark sensitive index shed 398 points today. The Nifty too broke the psychological barrier of 3,000 and ended the day at 2943, down 122 points.
There was pain across the world markets as well. Terrible global cues and ambiguity about short selling by FIIs saw the market recover a little and then fall to close at the low point of the day.
CNX Midcap index was down 3.29 per cent and BSE Smallcap index was down 3.55 per cent. BSE Metal index was down 11 per cent, BSE Auto index was down 7 per cent. The market breadth was negative with advances at 231 against declines of 1044 on the NSE.
