The honeymoon period that started last day of October looks over. Sensex sheds 385 points after the end of today trade. Nifty too remained miserable with a loss of 102 points. The market had a volatile day today; it opened lower, then clawed higher on hopes of a benign inflation number, but slipped again as the inflation number rose to 10.72 per cent for the week ended October 25 from 10.68 per cent a week ago.
Sensex ended the day at 9,734, down 3.81 per cent points from the previous close. Nifty shut shop at 2892, down 3.54 per cent. BSE Midcap index lost 2.2 per cent and BSE Smallcap was reduced by 2.2 per cent in trade today. FMCG, realty and healthcare stocks saw decent buying interest, while metal, IT and oil & gas stocks witnessed significant selling pressure. Top Sensex gainers included JP Associates, HUL, Ranbaxy and DLF, whereas losers were Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Sterlite Industries and RIL, among others.
The retail stocks remained no exception to how the Sensex behaved today. While majority of them remained red, only a few could smile today. PVR led the pack with a gain of over 10 per cent. Next to follow was Gitanjali, up 10.21 per cent. A quick view at the retail stocks today:
