The Only One

Must Read

Trends can be termed as strong when they appear season after season in nearly every designer`s collection. One such very strong trend that has been noticed for the past two years is the one-shoulder silhouette for dresses, kurtas, blouses, cholis and of course gowns.

Women probably don’t want that `in your face` exposure of bare skin. But a one -shoulder dress reveals a seductive and sexy bit of the arm. It looks demure and sober if it is teamed with a bat-wing sleeve or appears sultry and sensuous with a delicate strap on one shoulder that is holding the garment in place. At the Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort  as well as the Winter/Festive 2010 seasons, the one-shoulder silhouette has edged nearly every style on the ramps.

Designers Troy Costa and Swapnil Shinde have gowns for the red carpet that make the wearer look like a goddess with just one shoulder tantalizingly left visible.

Babita M`s Turkish delight collection has some sexy togas. Asmita Marwa`s Maya line offers great holiday and resort wear with a hint of shoulder thrown in.

Even Ritu Kumar felt that the one shoulder was just right for her winter/festive look for The Label.

At the HDIL India Couture week 2010 there was evening wear glamour which proved ideal for this look. Rina Dhaka`s fragile creations dropped one shoulder for the choli along with the petticoat under the sari to make the outfit look sheer and scintillating. Ayesha Depala`s line of 30 gowns had quite a few without one shoulder and sleeve.

What makes a one-shoulder outfit look good is that feminine touch which a bare arm presents. Layered in sheer fabrics and with drapes, dolman, raglan, bat-wing or kimono sleeves, the one shoulder immediately has that ethereal toga-like effect on the garment which women love and men find very appealing.

So whether it is for casual  or formal wear or even for that bridal trousseau, go for the one-shoulder look since it is the only one.
