Subway to Open 2,000 Additional Stores in North America in 2011

Must Read

Subway announced last week its aggressive growth strategy for this year, with more than 2,000 franchisees “actively searching” for locations.

“To continue to provide career opportunities to entrepreneurs and offer our world famous submarine sandwiches, which includes a wide range of healthier meal options, we will be aggressively looking for sites and ready to make deals,” said Chris Kan, training and business promotion specialist for Subway Real Estate, LLC. “We have a proven system in place and an ever increasing consumer base.”

Subway is opening locations in shopping centers, malls and freestanding locations, as well as non-traditional QSR locations such as hospitals, colleges, sports arenas and airports. Since January, the chain has opened nearly 700 new stores in 50 countries, 43 U.S. states, and 8 Canadian provinces.

Subway restaurants range from 100 to 5,000 square feet, a flexibility that has allowed recent openings, such as a restaurant housed on a crane at the World Trade Center construction site in New York. Other locations include a Jeep assembly plant, a car showroom, a church, a high school and a floating restaurant aboard a boat in Germany.

Subway is also testing a new café format for office buildings and upscale properties, a concept that integrates a sandwich shop and coffee bar and features brick or wood-paneled walls, armchairs and an expanded menu that includes baked goods and coffee drinks.
