Must Read

For Debarun Mukherjee, fashion is not an art form or means to an end but a way of life. Following his tryst with fashion, Mukherjee has taken a formal fashion education from the London College of Fashion and launched his brand Debarun in 2006 that potrays novelty and non conformism. Salon India talks to the designer to know more about him.

What challenges did you face while making a niche for yourself in the fashion industry?

The biggest challenge was finance as the fashion industry needs a lot of capital investment. Also, it was challenging to create a brand, it took a lot of time and effort to begin the journey. Moreover, it is an unorganised sector that promotes a lot of piracy and copying.

What is the importance of hair and make-up in fashion industry?

Hair and make-up plays a vital role in each field of fashion such as shows, shoots, videos and presentations. They add a complete look to your theme and concept.

What is the contribution of a designer in planning and creating the look of the model?

A designer is not someone who only makes clothes, he also contributes to the styling and overall look of the ensemble.

Who is your inspiration?

Valentino and Balenciaga from the international circuit. From India, I am inspired by Wendell Rodricks, Rohit Bal and Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Which is the most outrageous look adapted by you?

I was inspired by the snack ‘channa chor garam’, for the Lakme show. I took the mood of the snack and created different looks with the snacks’ colours like yellow, mustard and a bit of green. My embroidery, too, had a distinct style.

What is are missing elements in the fashion weeks?

Fashion weeks lack the serious buyers. It will be great if the shows can promote corporate tie-ups with various levels of designers, and not only the celebrated brands.

Tell us about your SR’2014 lookbook

The most important thing for the Spring Resort wear is to have a lot of colour with prints as they are making a major come back. I also see lots of eco friendly fabrics.

What are your future plans?

My future plan is to see my brand on a much bigger platform nationally and to create a prêt line which can reach the masses.
