N.D. Mhatre, Director General (Tech), Indian Textile Accessories & Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (ITAMMA) has conferred ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his dedicated efforts towards the Textile Industry by The Textile Association (India) – Madhya Pradesh Unit during Governing Council Meeting and auspicious occasion of completion of 50 years of TAI, M.P. Unit on 11-10-2014 at Pachmarhi, M.P.
Textile Accessories & Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (ITAMMA) since 2011, has come a long way from his initial days at The Bombay Dyeing & Mfg. Co. Ltd., where he worked on his passion for Research & Innovations from 1983 to 1986. Overlooking many good opportunities that come along his way over the two decades, he preferred taking up a career at The Bombay Textile Research Association to follow his love for research in the textile industry.
A Textile Technologist, Mhatre has served the Textile Industry for last 31 years. His dream journey in the Textile Industry began in the year 1980 when he took the decision of getting admission in the Textile Institute- SASMIRA. During his journey, he served the Textile Manufacturing Industry by getting involved in the various Technical and Marketing activities like consultancy services, training programmes, machinery maintenance audits, seminars, workshops, business-cum- study tours, projects, market surveys etc. Due to his command over Administrative work, Mhatre was assigned an additional portfolio as Co-coordinator, for managing the activities of the Powerloom Service centres of BTRA at Ichalkaranji, Solapur & Madhavnagar in Maharashtra.
An active personality, Mhatre got involved in the development of many innovations for the benefit of the Textile industry through various Government funded projects as a principal investigator. His developments were periodically honoured with BTRA, He was also awarded Shri. G.D. Birla and C.D. Foundation Awards, for his path-breaking efforts in the field.
Mhatre’s rationale was simple. He wanted to make handicapped weavers life easier. Though handloom has been undergoing regular modifications towards increasing productivity and improving the quality of fabric produced, the concept of a disabled person operating such machines was unheard of. He made innovations in the handloom so that it can be operated by the handicapped person, without electricity, minimizing the chance of accidents and in turn providing employment to them.
Mhatre has travelled to various global destinations like Germany, Spain, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Iran and Bangladesh to provide a business platform for its members as well as promoting brand ITAMMA. He is actively involved in the mission plan of ITAMMA with a vision of making India a hub for textile machines and accessories.
