Within two months of fashion e-tailer Myntra going app-only, Flipkart, Myntra’s parent company, is also set to follow the same route by September this year, according to media reports.
Commenting on this news, Flipkart said, “India is gradually transitioning from a mobile first to a mobile only country. At Flipkart, we have been following a mobile first approach and 70%-75% of our total traffic is already coming from our mobile app. We are constantly experimenting with various aspects of our service to create the best shopping experience for our users on our app. Meanwhile, we continue to offer both desktop as well as mobile option for our customers.”
Flipkart has 45 million registered users attracting over 10 million daily visits; the e-tailer plans to more than double the GMV of its products to USD8 nn this year.
Myntra has reportedly seen a 10% decline in sales post going app-only. Before transitioning to an app-only platform, Myntra had said that 90% of its traffic and 70% of sales came from mobiledevices.
In an interview given to television channel BBC News last month, Mukesh Bansal, founder, Myntra said, “There are three million PCs in India and 120 million smartphones. We believe mobile transactions are the future of retail, and we want to be ahead of the curve.”
As per a report by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International 2015, mobile internet users in India are expected to rise to 213 million by this year on the back of growing smartphone penetration. It said that there were 173 million mobile internet users in India in December 2014.
