Britain’s largest grocery chain, Tesco, has dropped dozens of Unilever products from its website after a row over prices in the wake of a partly Brexit-driven slump in the British currency.
Some of the products whose stocks are dwindling include Marmite, Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream and Lynx body spray.
Unilever is one of Britain’s biggest suppliers of branded food and household goods and claims its products are found in 98 per cent of UK households. Its brands also include Comfort, Dove, Hellmann’s, Magnum, Persil, Vaseline and PG Tips.
Tesco has said it will continue to sell Unilever goods in its stores until stocks run out, but that it hopes to have the issue resolved quickly.
According to a Sky News report: The row comes at a sensitive time for major supermarket chains as they continue to hold down prices to compete with hard discounters.
There has been a backlash – largely directed at Unilever amid accusations it is cashing in on the Brexit vote.
Other supermarkets have told Sky News they are having similar talks on price with Unilever, which is understood to have sought to add 10 per cent to its wholesale prices.
