In interests of the company’s vegetarian shareholders, Reliance Retail will not sell any meat, poultry or fish, confirmed company chairman Mukesh Ambani.
“Reliance will not attach its name with non-veg,” said Ambani at the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday.
Discussing the company’s retail plans, vegetarian shareholders from the Gujarat-Rajasthan belt raised this atypical issue at the AGM. They feared that if Reliance had large retail plans, it would also sell non-vegetarian food, which is a staple at comprehensive supermarkets.
Although the name Reliance will not be associated with non-veg, Ambani added that the company’s retail operations will still do that business, either through a subsidiary or by some other means.
“There is an integrated India,” he reminded his audience, implying that there are different cultures in the country and that business should cater to all.
