Shruti Sancheti: Reviving Dying Tradition

After establishing her label ‘Pinnacle’ in 2009, Shruti Sancheti got associated with
the Maharashtra State Handloom Corporation and aims to revive the dying traditional hand-woven textiles of the state. This dynamic designer has always believed in the unsurpassed legacy of Indian textiles and craftsmanship. Salon India talks to Sancheti to know more about her.

What were the challenges that you faced while making a niche for yourself in the fashion industry?
It is a competitive space and everybody is constantly evolving. However, the biggest challenge I have faced was my base – Nagpur. I had to shuffle between the metros, but I have managed to find my space. I’m more productive and lead a stress-free life.

What is the importance of hair and make-up in fashion?
Hair and make-up is an integral part of any look and has to be cohesive with the theme and clearly express the designer’s vision.

What is the contribution of a designer in planning and creating the look of the model?
The designer has a concept or a reference or an idea. It is the brief they provide to the hair and make-up team to come up with a look which is executed as per the vision and inputs from both the parties.

Who is your inspiration?
My inspiration has always been the simple girl who has an Indian soul, but a global outlook. Simplicity, restraint and youthfulness are key words for any look that I plan.

Which is the most outrageous look adopted by you?
Most of my collections have been understated so the hair and make-up look has been accordingly. I had designed some outlandish Sufi caps. In totality it was a simple, non fussy and uncomplicated look.

What is the missing elements in the fashion weeks?
The missing element is when it comes to hair and make-up, where sharing space with other designers bring confusion for the make-up and hair experts.

What is your SR’2014 lookbook like?
I have used flowers as hair accessory as I feel they look beautiful in summer. I have kept the tied-up hair look in a slightly Victorian-French style. Make-up is fresh and dewy with lips in pink and orange.

What are your future plans?
To work on more and more textiles and crafts of the country and the world and present a timeless yet elegant clothing solutions and make the brand a force to reckon with.
